Bill Moyers’ latest PBS commentary has been getting a lot of attention in the blogosphere. Some of the screeds I’ve seen are typical knee jerk ideological reactions. And, really, Moyers deserves to get a “fisking” ( I hate that term) for this simplistic bit of pablum. But there’s something else going on here that afflicts both left and right; it is a major misunderstanding of politics in the American context: Change is incremental. These Chicken Little warnings of swift and devastating change, from the left or right, rarely if ever accurately predict political outcomes. There are many reasons for this, but one of the most important reasons is, simply, that not all Republicans (or Democrats, or what-have-you) think alike. Expect a certain amount of gridlock to continue. That’s a good thing.
