Brendan Nyhan takes Garrison Keillor to task for a cheap smear of Senator-elect Norm Coleman in Salon. While I think Nyhan is absolutely correct to call Keillor on this nasty business, I’m left wondering about something else: Why do we continue to take entertainers seriously? I think we all have an answer, so I simply want to keep the question before the public mind. My hope is, given a choice between a legitimate, learned commentator and an entertainer, that most citizens would choose substance over style. Nyhan, however, as a critical commentator, must deal with a public sphere as it actually works, not as I would wish it to be. There are those uninformed souls who, having their critical faculties stunted by the current media environment, don’t understand that entertainers are usually not learned commentators.
