A poor choice of words conveyed to some the impression that I embraced the discarded policies of the past. Nothing could be further from the truth, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by my statement.
Yesterday, I was wrong in my assertion that Lott might not feel the need to apologize. I’m glad he’s made this gesture. It’s the right thing to do. I stand by my analysis of his remarks.
UPDATE (8:05 a.m.): Howard Kurtz asks why the press was so late in covering this (did they cover it?). He should ask himself the same question.
