Lott issues an apology…

Sen. Trent Lott issued an apology for remarks made at the birthday and retirement celebration for Strom Thurmond. Lott said:

A poor choice of words conveyed to some the impression that I embraced the discarded policies of the past. Nothing could be further from the truth, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by my statement.

Yesterday, I was wrong in my assertion that Lott might not feel the need to apologize. I’m glad he’s made this gesture. It’s the right thing to do. I stand by my analysis of his remarks.

UPDATE (8:05 a.m.): Howard Kurtz asks why the press was so late in covering this (did they cover it?). He should ask himself the same question.

UPDATE (11:45 a.m.): Robert A. George, writing in the NRO, has this to say. Ouch!

UPDATE (11:55 a.m.): I love the raw, clear-minded cynicism of this post from the new Hit & Run blog by Reason magazine. Politics is beautiful.
