Al Gore is the guest host on Saturday Night Live tonight at 10:30 p.m. central. You may recall from his recent interview with Barbara Walters that Gore has been trying to be funnier. One of his daughters is apparently writing material for him. Tonight will be an interesting test: Can Gore be funny, i.e. will we laugh at him or with him?
Earlier in the fall, Sen. John McCain hosted the show. I thought he did an excellent job. He was self-deprecating without losing his dignity. McCain set the bar high for Gore.
As regular Rhetorica readers know, I dislike how much entertainment intrudes on politics. That doesn’t mean, however, that I’m not a realist about the current media situation. Playing SNL has become a near necessity. Pundits will critique performances. And judgments will be made about image. I’ll be playing into that right here on this blog. You can expect my assessment of Gore’s performance–my FWIW opinion–by early tomorrow morning.
