I wonder about this article in the New York Daily News claiming that CBS, 60 Minutes, and Leslie Stahl knew on Friday afternoon before taping the interview that Al Gore would not run for President. How else to explain Stahl’s reaction? How else to explain the fact that she had nothing of substance to ask Gore? I contend that, with just an hour of prep time, Stahl should have had enough material to sustain a proper interview. In my opinion, she was expecting the opposite announcement.
UPDATE (3:10 p.m.): This column in The Washington Post is pretty convincing that Leslie Stahl knew about Gore’s decision before the interview. So why didn’t she ask about his appearance on SNL? Why was she so ill-prepared? Hmmm…The upshot is, of course, that I got this all wrong.
