Rhetorica is not a war blog. Because I resist that identity, I often overlook items that I should otherwise mention. On TomPaine.com today you’ll find an open letter to the press by a number of well-known authors, commentators, and lesser-known academics asking journalists, essentially, to resist several of the structural biases of journalism–in particular, narrative bias and status quo bias–in regard to coverage of a war with Iraq.
While we may certainly debate the merits of their suggestions as journalistic advice, I offer this link to highlight the structural nature of media bias, not to push their suggestions (although I am largely in agreement). In this regard, I consider this letter quite instructive.
